Between May and September, UV levels across Egypt regularly sit in the very high range. Sunscreen stops being a beauty step and becomes basic skin protection. Here is how to choose one you will actually use every day.
Start with SPF 50+, not SPF 30
SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB. SPF 50 blocks about 98%. That sounds like a small gap, but in practice almost nobody applies the full recommended amount, so the higher number gives you a safety margin. In Egyptian summer, go straight to SPF 50+.
Look for UVA protection too
SPF only measures UVB, the rays that burn. UVA is what ages the skin and worsens pigmentation, and it passes through window glass. Look for the words broad spectrum, a PA+++ rating, or a UVA logo in a circle on the pack.
Mineral or chemical?
- Mineral (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide): sits on top of the skin, very gentle, the better choice for sensitive or reactive skin and for children. Can leave a slight white cast.
- Chemical: absorbs into the top layer, cosmetically invisible, better under make-up. Occasionally stings sensitive eyes.
Match the texture to your skin
- Oily or acne-prone: a fluid or gel marked non-comedogenic, ideally with a matte finish.
- Dry: a cream sunscreen with added moisturisers so you are not layering three products.
- Sensitive: mineral, fragrance-free.
The part everyone gets wrong
Two finger-lengths of product for the face and neck, applied as the last step of your morning routine, and reapplied every two to three hours if you are outdoors. A sunscreen applied thinly once at 8 AM is not doing the job the label promises.
